January 4, 2012: Holiday Donations

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for your Holiday Donations!

December 23 was a fantastic day for those students who attended school. Despite the fact that it was one day before Christmas Eve, the students were very well behaved, were On Task, On Time, and were true winners of the drawings at the end of the school day. Every student who attended was a lucky winner of a prize of some kind. Thanks to all patrons who brought in donations. The donations were fantastic. We had enough donations and food vendor coupons for every student to receive a prize. Thanks again for your donations. It made the day GREAT.

September 27, 2011: Adequate Yearly Progress

Things at SOJO are running very smoothly. I am pleased to report that South Jordan Middle School has made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the 2011-12 school year. This is great news!! AYP is an indicator of how much a school has shown progress and levels of proficiency in Language Arts and Mathematics through the last year. Our test scores show how we performed as a school. The goal is to have every student improving every year until every student is proficient in both Math and Language Arts. Proficient means scoring at a level 3 or 4 on the Core CRT Assessment given at the end of each school year. We have consistently been at or near the top of Jordan District in our testing over the years. We want to continue this tradition. This will require our students to work hard in preparation for all testing. Our teachers are up to the challenge of teaching every student to work hard and improve in specific areas. Our students will rise to teacher expectations. Teachers will work hard to prepare them academically. Together we will continue to strive for greatness. Way to go SOJO!!

August 11, 2011: Welcome to the 2011-2012 School Year!

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year. I hope everyone had a wonderful summer vacation. As your new principal, I am very excited to be part of the SOJO culture and climate. I will be updating you on the yearly progress of SOJO and all the wonderful achievements your student(s) will obtain throughout the school year, here on my Principal’s Blog. SOJO teachers are ready to exercise and stretch student(s) minds. We are striving to help your student(s) and enable them to become life-long learners.

We are excited to announce the names of five new teachers to SOJO: Carissa Lemmon to Language Arts, Tadd Farmer to Social Studies, Mandi Jensen to CTE, Diane Congdon to PE, and Sandee Robison to the Autism Cluster.

We also will have Melanie Snitker as an addition to our Guidance Counseling team. Boasting four guidance counselors will allow us to better serve the needs of your student(s).

Gaylene Phister is the new head secretary who will help make your contact with the school a pleasant one. If you have any concerns, please feel free to let Gaylene or myself know immediately.

We also have a new Assistant Principal, Jim Marsh. He comes to SOJO with a strong service record as an assistant. He will oversee the needs of students with the last names L-Z. He is a wonderful person and will help SOJO students be successful. Our other Assistant Principal is Shelly Gottfredson, who was with us last year. Shelly and Jim will be a strong administrative team who will help with all student services.

We also have a new Media Specialist Aide in Angela Huntington. She will help students in all aspects of the Library. Richard Strasters is our district IT person who helps keep our computers and labs functioning for student use.

I am very excited with these new additions to the SOJO team and I will work tirelessly to serve you and your student(s) this school year. After seven years at SOJO, I am always excited for a new school year and the endless possibilities your student(s) may achieve. Let’s have a wonderful school year.

August 11, 2011: Online Enrollment Questions

Dear Parents,

I want to thank you for your enthusiasm as well as your patience with us as we have commenced online enrollment. So far it has gone very well with only a few questions that I would like to answer for you.

  • There has been some confusion about online registration versus enrollment. The online process completes the paperwork and needed parental approval required to enroll your student in school. Scheduling and class selection was completed last spring and class schedules will be mailed after online enrollment is completed.
  • If you wish to pay your fees online with a credit card there is a $5 service charge. This fee is to cover the fee that the school district is charged by the credit card companies to process the bills. I wish there was a good way to get rid of it and I apologize for any inconvenience it causes—Remember, you can still pay with a check or cash and either mail or drop it by the school with your signed forms if you wish to do so. Many patrons feel the online payment system has been very convenient.
  • Please remember there are still forms that you are required to sign and mail in or drop off.
  • If you do not have access to the Internet or, if you would like to register by mail, please stop by the school and we will assist you in the online registration in our main office anytime between 8:00am and 2:30pm. We have computers to use, people to help and/or hardcopies of registration to pick up.
  • Currently 2700 West is under construction. We are being told that they will be completed with their work before the start of school. We are keeping our fingers crossed.

Thanks again for your continued support, patience, and understanding! Please check our website for updates or call me if you have questions. We anticipate our communication and online support to only get better and better. I will also take advantage of Facebook and Twitter as modes of communicating with you. Please add us to your FB and Twitter. I look forward to a great year. Please encourage your children to read as much as possible and have a fun, safe, rest of your summer!

With Regards,

Shawn McLeod
