Dance Addendum

Course Requirements:

Fifteen participation points will be awarded each day to students who are on time, prepared, and participating in class. Five points will be taken off for each of the requirements that students fail to meet for the day. For example, if a student is tardy, but still dresses and participates in class, that student will be awarded ten points for the day instead of the full fifteen.

Students will be given six minutes after the tardy bell to change into their dance clothes and be in class, and six minutes at the end of class to change back into their regular clothes. If a student is not dressing for the day, they will be marked tardy if they are not in class when the bell rings and will be marked as a sluff if they leave before the bell rings to end class.

All dance students will be required to perform in an end of semester dance concert. The date and time for this performance will be specified at a later date. Absenteeism to concerts cannot be made up unless an emergency or illness occurs. Events such as babysitting, sports, celebrations, religious activities, etc. are not excusable emergencies. To request an excuse from a performance requires a personal communication from the parent, received at least two weeks before the concert so an alternate assignment can be completed in time. Registration for this performance course pre-supposes that our student performers desire to perform and are personally committed to attend all concert performances.

Proper Attire:

Students are expected to come to class each day ready to dance. Clothing must be non-restrictive and easy to move in. Dress code standards apply to dance attire. If attire worn is in violation of the dress code, the student will be given a warning and be asked to change. If the problem occurs again, the student will lose all participation points for the day.

Expectations:

  1. Do your best. If a student is not feeling well or has an injury, they will be permitted to sit out and do an alternative assignment. If a student is sitting out on a regular basis, a parent or doctor note will be required in order for the student to receive full participation points. Otherwise, full participation is required to succeed in this class.
  2. Treat other students and the teacher with respect. Disrespect in any form will not be tolerated. If a student is being disrespectful and does not stop when warned by the teacher, that student will lose all of his/her participation points for the day.
  3. NO GUM. NO EXCEPTIONS. (Gum is distracting, dangerous, and difficult to get off of the dance floor.)

Late Work:

Late work will be accepted up until one week before the end of the quarter. Each day an assignment is late, an additional 10% will be taken off of the original score. After a week, the assignment will be worth no more than half credit.

Extra Credit:

Students can earn up to 30 points of extra credit each quarter. They can earn a possible 10 points each time they view a dance performance (live or video recording) and then give an oral or written presentation to the class. This critique should include what they liked about the performance, what they disliked, what could have been better, and different elements of dance seen within the choreography.
