Math and Common Core Q & A

MATH CONCERNS Q&A:
1. Will our math classes have textbooks for the students this year?
Textbooks are not currently available that align with the integrated common core mathematics model that Utah has adopted. Online resources are available for our teachers and our students. If you are interested in seeing what is currently being used, please go to the district website at jordandistrict.org and click on the common core icon. From there, you can select secondary mathematics and then go to your student’s course. Additional online resources are also listed from this mathematics website.
2. Do the students who struggle need to be moved to a previous math class?
Changing math teachers or math levels is not the answer as the learning styles are the same for all math classes. Stay in the current math class, seek extra help if needed, attend tutoring sessions, stay positive and continue to give your best effort. Please note, if a student is moved from Secondary Math 1 Honors into Secondary Math 1, they are no longer on track to reach Calculus in high school.
3. How can our students receive additional help?
Teachers are available before and after school to assist your students. Please have them speak with their teacher and arrange for tutor times. Also, every Monday from 3-4pm in room B-11, student math tutoring will take place for all math levels. Tutoring will be available every Monday throughout the school year.
4. How can a parent assist their student?
Be supportive of their struggles. The new math core is designed for students to come to a deeper understanding of mathematic concepts. It is a new way of thinking, and our students may be struggling. As the year progresses, they will adapt and understand this style more each day. By showing a positive attitude, and having parent support, the students will become less frustrated and look for better ways to understand the concepts.
5. Are there resources available for the parents to help their students?

ATTENTION ALL MATH STUDENTS AND PARENTS:
We would like to address some concerns regarding common core implementation. These standards are statewide and are being implemented at different grades and levels. The implementation of the mathematics common core is both exciting and full of challenges.
Please be patient with your student’s learning curve as this new core is challenging your students to think in a new way. Common core promotes students’ ability to demonstrate deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Students are expected to perform calculations and demonstrate what practical applications are for each concept. When they graduate from high school, they will have an excellent mathematics background and be college and career ready.
We understand that some of our students are in need of additional time and support to feel successful with common core mathematics. Student tutoring is being offered every Monday from 3-4pm in room B-11 for all math levels. Please have your student take advantage of this tutoring if needed. Stay positive with your student and be as supportive as possible. Communicate with your student’s teacher if you are seeking for some ways to support your student at home.
Our teachers, district personnel, and state personnel are working tirelessly to implement resources that have already been developed and to create additional materials for common core. Changing math teachers or math levels is not the answer for struggling students, as the learning styles are the same for all math classes. Together we can make this math transition successful for your student. Patience, encouragement, and a positive attitude will go a long way in supporting your student that may be currently struggling in math.
