Reading Department Addendum

Revised 8/2011

AR Policy:

  • Teachers will count Accelerated Reader as 20% of the student’s grade. The AR score will be recorded a minimum of two (2) times a quarter, at midterm and at the end of the quarter. AR points count in both English and reading classes.
  • Teachers may require pre-approval on novels. Books made into movies will NOT be accepted unless pre-approved by the teacher. Students must have a note from a guardian verifying he/she watched the student read the book.
  • A student who chooses to read a book that is NOT an AR book, may submit a book report. Book report forms are available through their 7th grade reading teachers and 8th grade Language Arts teachers.
  • The AR program is set up to assist students in reaching their individualized reading goals. Students will be expected to choose books within their reading zones. The zone identifies the optimal book level for the student. Students will receive part of their AR grade for achieving their assigned book level average. Computer tests will be taken to score the student’s comprehension of a book.
  • AR point goals for the quarter are based on AT LEAST a half hour of reading per day. Students are given time in class regularly to read self-selected books; however, students must consistently read at home in order to meet their AR goals.

Reading Classroom Late Work Policy:

  • Teachers will reduce late assignments 20% of earned points the first day. After that, an assignment will be worth 50% of earned credit.
  • Credit will remain at the 50% rate until the cut-off date set by the teacher.
  • Long term projects, papers, and assignments where students have multiple days to complete the work will not be accepted late.
  • It is expected that students will plan ahead in order to turn in assignments on time. If a home printer runs out of ink, or will not work, students need to e-mail the information to a neighbor or friend to print the assignment in order to turn it in on time. Printer and/or computer issues are NOT valid reasons for receiving extra time to turn in assignments.

Honesty:

  • Students are expected to behave ethically. Cheating on tests, taking or having someone take an AR test for another student, copying an assignment, or any other form of plagiarism will not be tolerated. Any student who participates in this activity will receive a “U” in citizenship, and receive no credit for the assignment.

Reading Logs:

  • Reading logs will be completed in class. The student will read for 20 minutes (in class) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and then write a response. If a student is absent on a reading day, the reading (and response) will need to be made up AT HOME and turned in the day the student returns to school after the absence.
  • Reading logs are due each Friday or the last day of the week. Late reading logs are NOT accepted.
